Who wrote this and how to read it
Corbinsoft is a certified Siemens Polarion partner, and we work only on Polarion. We wrote this Polarion vs Codebeamer comparison to be useful even if you choose Codebeamer. Statements about Codebeamer come from PTC's public documentation, linked below. Both products change between releases, so confirm details for the version you would deploy.
The short version: Siemens Polarion and PTC Codebeamer are both full ALM platforms aimed at regulated industries. PTC acquired Codebeamer's developer, Intland Software, in 2022 and sells Codebeamer alongside its Windchill PLM. The choice often follows your PLM landscape and how you manage product variants.
Scope: two full ALM platforms
Polarion stores requirements, test cases, test runs, tasks, defects, risks and change requests as work items in one repository, with one permission model and one workflow engine.
Codebeamer covers a similar range. PTC describes it as combining requirements, risk and test management with regulatory compliance, and its configurable trackers hold items that can be shown in Document, List, Kanban and Calendar views. Because the scopes overlap so much, the deciding factors tend to be authoring style, variant management, integrations and the partner ecosystem around each product.

Document-centric authoring
In Polarion, a LiveDoc is a rich-text document whose paragraphs can be work items of any type, so one specification can mix requirements, headings, figures and explanatory text while every requirement stays individually linkable. Depending on license tier, Polarion also supports Microsoft Word round-trip for reviewers outside the tool.
Codebeamer's Document View presents a tracker's items as a hierarchical document with a table of contents, comments and links to reviews and the traceability browser. Its Word round-trip exports items to a .docx file, uses Word's Track Changes to detect edits, and lets you review and selectively import the changes. PTC notes that round-trip requires Microsoft Word.
Traceability and impact analysis
In Polarion, typed link roles such as verifies or implements connect any work item types, and changes can mark linked items as suspect. Coverage and impact queries run across requirements, tests, defects and tasks in one repository, and LiveReport pages or LiveDocs present them as traceability matrices.
Codebeamer links tracker items through references and relations, with a traceability browser to follow them across trackers. PTC highlights that risks link directly to requirements and mitigations, and that direct links from requirements to test results make coverage gaps visible. In practice, both tools handle requirement-to-test traceability well; evaluate them on the specific matrices and impact reports your auditors expect.
Reviews, approvals and electronic signatures
Polarion attaches electronic signatures to workflow transitions on work items and LiveDocs. Signers re-authenticate, the history of every item and document is kept as an audit trail, and workflow conditions can block a transition until required fields or links are present. Validation of your configuration remains your responsibility; our Polarion Part 11 validation service covers that work.
Codebeamer's Review Hub is used to review and approve work items, with reviews created from trackers, reports or releases. Review votes can require a signature by password or by username and password. On tracker workflows, a "Validate the user signature (password)" action can be attached to critical state transitions; PTC documents a separate route for organisations that use single sign-on.

Baselines, branching and variant management
Variant management is a strength of the PTC side. Codebeamer baselines are read-only references to content at a moment in time and can be compared with each other. Codebeamer 3.x supports streams and merging trackers into streams for parallel product lines. PTC also owns pure-systems, maker of pure::variants, which integrates with Codebeamer for feature-based variant management.

Polarion records every change as a repository revision, so any document or work item can be viewed as it was at a past point. Baselines name those points, LiveDocs can be branched for variants or releases, and collections group specific document revisions into a consistent set for a release or regulatory submission. Teams with large feature-model product lines should test both approaches against real scenarios.
Test and risk management
Polarion test cases are work items, often authored in a LiveDoc test specification. Test run templates define which tests to execute, each test run holds a test record and verdict per test case, and failed steps can raise linked defects. Test parameters let one test case run in several iterations with different values, and automated results in xUnit format can be imported into test runs. Risks are work items linked to the hazards, mitigations and verification that address them.
Codebeamer provides test planning, execution and coverage tracking in the same platform as requirements, and its risk management links risks to requirements and mitigation measures. PTC's medical template adds FMEA capabilities.
Deployment, integrations, ReqIF and customization
Deployment options
Polarion runs on-premises or as Polarion X, the Siemens-hosted cloud offering. Codebeamer runs on-premises or as Codebeamer+, PTC's hosted SaaS offering, which PTC says shares the same codebase.

Integrations
Polarion integrates with Siemens Teamcenter, which matters if your mechanical and electrical design data already lives there. Codebeamer connects with PTC Windchill through OSLC, so Windchill parts can be linked and traced to Codebeamer requirements and tests. MathWorks also documents a connection between Simulink Requirements Toolbox and Codebeamer.

ReqIF interoperability
Both products import and export ReqIF. Codebeamer supports ReqIF 1.0.1 and later, including round-trip exchange and re-import of updates. ReqIF is also a common route for moving content out of IBM DOORS, which our DOORS migration service handles on the Polarion side.

Customization and reporting
Polarion is configured through work item types, custom fields, workflows and link roles, and extended with workflow conditions and functions, JavaScript workflow scripts, Velocity in LiveReport pages, a Java API and a REST API. Our Polarion scripting service builds these extensions. Codebeamer workflows can run actions on transitions, including custom scripts in Groovy or JavaScript, and PTC recommends its Swagger-documented REST API for new integrations.

Regulated-industry templates
PTC publishes preconfigured Codebeamer templates for automotive (ISO 26262 and ASPICE), medical devices (IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 82304-1 and FDA 21 CFR Parts 11 and 820) and avionics (DO-178C, DO-254 and AMC 20-152A). Polarion projects are created from templates, which a partner or in-house team configures to the standards you work under.

When Codebeamer may fit better
We recommend a serious look at Codebeamer when:
- PTC Windchill is your PLM backbone and you want ALM-to-PLM traceability from the same vendor.
- Your product-line strategy depends on feature-based variant management with pure::variants, or on parallel streams of requirements.
- PTC's preconfigured templates for ISO 26262, ASPICE, IEC 62304 or DO-178C match your process closely enough to adopt with little change.
- You prefer a vendor-hosted SaaS deployment from PTC and are already a PTC customer.
Choosing between them
Choose Polarion when you want LiveDoc authoring, workflow-driven signatures and lifecycle-wide traceability in one repository, and when Siemens Teamcenter is part of your digital thread. That combination suits regulated programs in medical devices and automotive. Our Polarion implementation service and the wider Polarion services cover the rollout.
Choose Codebeamer when PTC is your PLM vendor or its variant management and templates are central to your plans. Either way, pilot with your own data, reviews and reports. For other comparisons, see Polarion vs Jama Connect and Polarion vs DOORS Next, or start with our Why ALM guide.
