Who wrote this and how to read it
Corbinsoft is a certified Siemens Polarion partner, and we work only on Polarion. We wrote this Polarion vs Jama comparison to be useful even if you choose Jama Connect. Statements about Jama Connect come from Jama Software's public documentation, linked below. Both products change between releases, so confirm details for the version you would deploy.
The short version: Polarion is a unified application lifecycle management (ALM) platform. Jama Connect, from Jama Software (acquired by Francisco Partners in 2024), centres on requirements, with test management, risk analysis and reviews built in, and connects to development tools such as Jira.
Scope: requirements platform or full ALM
Polarion stores requirements, test cases, test runs, tasks, defects, risks and change requests as work items in one repository, with one permission model and one workflow engine. Development tasks can live alongside the requirements they implement.
Jama Connect manages requirements, test plans and runs, defects, risk analyses and reviews in one application. Software development work usually stays in a tool such as Jira, synchronised through Jama Connect Interchange. That split suits teams committed to Jira; Polarion covers more of the lifecycle natively.
Document-centric authoring
In Polarion, a LiveDoc is a rich-text document whose paragraphs can be work items of any type, so a specification reads like a document while every requirement stays individually linkable and versioned. Depending on license tier, Polarion also supports Microsoft Word round-trip for reviewers outside the tool.
Jama Connect organises items in a project tree of components, sets and folders, and offers a Document View and a Reading View for reading them in sequence. Word output is generated through Office Templates from List, Reading or Document View, and templates can be customised.
Traceability and impact analysis
Traceability is a focus area for Jama. Relationship rules define which item types should link, and items whose links do not match are flagged. Jama calls its approach Live Traceability: a Traceability Information Model sets the expected relationships, and the Live Trace Explorer shows a Trace Score, the percentage of those relationships that exist. Trace View, Coverage Explorer, Impact Analysis and suspect links cover daily analysis.

In Polarion, typed link roles such as verifies or implements connect any work item types, and changes can mark linked items as suspect. Coverage and impact queries reach tests, defects and tasks in the same repository, and LiveReport pages or LiveDocs present them as traceability matrices.
Reviews, approvals and electronic signatures
Jama's Review Center lets moderators send content out for review, collect comments and record approvals. Approvers sign by re-entering their username and password (or through SAML), and signatures carry a time and date stamp, an audit trail and a stated meaning. Baselines can also be signed. Jama publishes a datasheet mapping Jama Connect to 21 CFR Part 11.

Polarion attaches electronic signatures to workflow transitions on work items and LiveDocs. Signers re-authenticate, and the history of every item and document is kept as an audit trail. Workflow conditions can block a transition until required fields or links are present. In both products, validating your configuration remains your responsibility; our Polarion Part 11 validation service covers that work.
Baselines, reuse and variants
Jama Connect baselines capture items at a point in time and can be compared with each other or with current content. For product variants, Jama's reuse and synchronization features support a library approach, where shared requirements are pulled into and pushed from projects, or a branching approach based on duplicating projects. Synchronised items share a global ID, so changes are flagged.

Polarion records every change as a repository revision, so any document or work item can be viewed as it was at a past point. Baselines name those points, LiveDocs can be branched for variants or releases, and collections group specific document revisions into a consistent set for a release or regulatory submission.
Test and risk management
Jama Connect structures testing as test plans, optional test groups and test cycles. Each test case in a cycle produces a test run, run results roll up to the test case status, and defects logged during execution stay linked to the test and its requirements. For risk, Jama provides a framework for FMEA and preliminary hazard analysis aligned to ISO 14971.

Polarion test cases are work items, often authored in a LiveDoc. Test run templates define which tests to execute, each test run holds a test record and verdict per test case, and failed steps can raise linked defects. Test parameters let one test case run in several iterations with different values, and automated results in xUnit format can be imported into test runs. Risks are work items linked to the hazards, mitigations and verification that address them.

Deployment, integrations, ReqIF and customization
Deployment options
Polarion runs on-premises or as Polarion X, the Siemens-hosted cloud offering. Jama Connect is available as Jama Connect Cloud, hosted on Amazon Web Services, or as Jama Connect Self-Hosted on your own infrastructure.

Integrations
Polarion integrates with Siemens Teamcenter, useful when your design data already lives there. Jama's integrations run largely through Jama Connect Interchange, which synchronises with Jira, and Jama describes integrations with Cameo for model-based systems engineering.
ReqIF interoperability
Polarion imports and exports ReqIF. Jama supports ReqIF through Jama Connect Interchange for ReqIF, which imports, exports and re-imports updates without duplicating requirements. ReqIF is also a common route out of IBM DOORS; see our DOORS migration service.

Reporting and customization
Both products use Velocity for custom reports: Jama administrators upload Velocity reports, and Polarion LiveReport pages and widgets use Velocity. Jama workflows are configured per item type as status transitions with permissions, notifications and locking, plus a REST API. Polarion offers workflow conditions and functions, JavaScript workflow scripts, a Java API and a REST API. Our Polarion scripting service builds these extensions.

Regulated-industry starting points
Jama offers frameworks for automotive (ASPICE, ISO 26262, ISO 21434) and medical devices (design controls, ISO 14971). Polarion projects are created from templates that a partner or in-house team configures to standards such as IEC 62304 or ISO 26262.

When Jama Connect may fit better
We recommend a serious look at Jama Connect when:
- Your software teams will stay in Jira and you want a dedicated requirements, test and risk tool beside it.
- You want traceability expectations defined up front and measured continuously with a Trace Score.
- Jama's automotive or medical device frameworks match your process closely enough to adopt with little change.
- Many occasional reviewers need a focused place to comment on and approve content.
Choosing between them
Choose Polarion when you want requirements, verification, risk, tasks and change in one repository, with LiveDoc authoring, workflow-driven signatures and a path to Siemens Teamcenter. That suits regulated programs in medical devices and automotive. Our Polarion implementation service and the wider Polarion services cover the rollout.
Choose Jama Connect when a focused requirements platform next to Jira fits your organisation and its frameworks match your process. Either way, pilot with your own data. See also Polarion vs Codebeamer and Polarion vs DOORS Next, or start with our Why ALM guide.
